Scaling New Heights: Taking on Mount Kilimanjaro
On Sunday, August 11, our Climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania begins. This is the culmination of months of preparation.
Our journey will start at the base of Kilimanjaro, where we will face hot tropical conditions. As we ascend, we will traverse through glaciers, snow, and ice fields to reach the summit. This climb is a powerful metaphor for life itself—constantly on the edge, pushing boundaries, and testing our limits.
Standing at 19,341 feet, Kilimanjaro is significantly higher than Ireland’s tallest peak, Carrauntoohil, which is just 3,407 feet.
Kilimanjaro is not only the highest mountain in Africa, but also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.
Our Cause: The Shalom Centre for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation
We are climbing to support the Shalom Centre for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation (SCCRR) in Kenya. Founded in 2009 by Fr. Pat Devine, an Irish missionary, this multi-denominational organisation focuses on addressing the root causes of violence and poverty in the tribal lands of eastern Africa. Fr. Devine explains:
The Journey So Far
The Challenge began on January 1st, 2024, as a New Year’s resolution.
Our first port of call for this challenge was Pat Falvey in Killarney. Pat has led the first Irish-led team to reach the South Pole, stood at the North Pole, skied across the Greenland Ice Cap, and led the largest team to complete the South Georgia traverse.
