Brampton Fire Recruits Fundraise for CMHA
Each Brampton Fire and Emergency Services Firefighter Recruit Class has the honourable tradition of raising funds for a group in our community in need of help. Firefighters love to help and serve their community in any way possible.
The BFES 21-01 Recruit Class has chosen to support the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA)-Peel Region's Youth Net program. Youth Net offers community-based, mental health awareness services to support youth empowerment, and provides information about mental health services. This includes providing service in safe and convenient locations, including schools, community agencies and youth groups.
UPDATED DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS: Since firefighters also love a good physical challenge, the BFES 21-01 Recruit Class had planned a Marathon Relay. Each of the 21 recruits were going to run a 2 km course while wearing full firefighter bunker gear (40 pounds!) -- the total distance run by the recruits would have equalled a full marathon distance, 42 km! However, due to the new COVID-19 restrictions, we have to cancel the relay.
We hope to gain the support of local and regional businesses, family, and friends to help raise funds for Youth Net. When you donate, your name will be entered into a random draw to win one of our many amazing prizes. We will be posting updates with details on the prizes so check back to see what you could win.
Canadian Youth Mental Health Statistics:
• 70% of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence
• Wait times for counselling and therapy can be long, especially for children and youth. In Ontario, wait times of six months to one year are common
• An estimated 1.2 million children and youth in Canada are affected by mental illness—yet, less than 20 per cent will receive appropriate treatment.
• Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged 15-24
• A growing body of international evidence demonstrates that promotion, prevention, and early intervention initiatives show positive returns on investment.
