Brandon & Sheri With Glioblastoma Treatment

Brandon and Sheri are some of the kindest people I know. Their sweet family lives just around the corner from us and they have been so supportive and kind to our family. This past summer their lives took an unexpected and devastating twist.

After experiencing a continuous severe headache for two weeks, Brandon underwent a craniotomy and 2/3 of his temporal lobe was removed. Thankfully there has been no immediate loss of function however what the family has been facing and continues to face is gut-wrenching. Brandon has high grade glioma, or glioblastoma, an aggresive type of brain cancer. There is no cure. In most cases it grows back, however they remain hopeful that Brandon will beat the odds. The doctor removed all of the tumor he could see however with this type of tumor/cancer, it has “tentacles” that reach out from the main tumor mass and invades healthy brain tissue. Microscopic disease is always left behind after surgery and because of this, Brandon is currently being treated with radiation in combination with chemotherapy to try to kill any remaining cancer cells. After this first phase of treatment is complete and if subsequent scans look favorable, he will continue with chemotherapy for the rest of his life and will have scans every couple of months to monitor any growth. He will also be treated with a wearable, portable device that is a type of treatment specifically for glioblastoma, and will wear it everyday for the long-term.

Despite this devastating diagnosis, Brandon and his family are adjusting to their new "normal" and are finding their rhythm. Meanwhile, medical bills are coming in. Even with insurance, a diagnosis like this comes with an unexpected financial burden and this is the last thing they should have to worry about.
