Hi, my name is Julie Crouse and I'm setting up this page on behalf of Abbey Brassfield, her husband Dick Brassfield and their wonderful boys (Wyatt, Connor and Luke).
.
Abbey early last week was diagnosed with the flu virus and it took an unexpected turn for the worse to include pneumonia, sepsis, and a blood infection. On Friday, she went to the ER and has since been put into a medically induced coma. She is on a ventilator at the ICU at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk (not Virginia Beach) under the close watch of some amazing doctors. It’s a very difficult time for Dick and the kids (Wyatt, Connor and Luke) but we all know Abbey - she is fierce, strong, and will fight hard in the coming days, weeks and months.

Abbey is a true friend, colleague, daughter, wife and mom. Abbey works in administration at Broadwater Academy and gives so much of her heart and talents into what she does and is a leader in our community. She loves fitness, the outdoors, boating with her family, being a volunteer soccer coach, and is a Broadwater mom to so many kids including mine. I still don’t know how she does it all. This is our chance to thank her for all she does and take care of her by helping her family.

Regardless of how you know Abbey or their family, past or present, it’s amazing to see the community rally together to support the Brassfield family during this unexpected time. The eastern shore is such a special place with so many kind and generous people.

Dick and the kids are all so grateful for the outpouring of love and concern and kindness offered during this very incredibly difficult time. The kids are back in school and Dick is getting them settled. He plans to return to work soon so he can continue to provide for his family and keep their medical coverage through his work. Their family will be impacted financially and with unexpected expenses so thank you for helping them however you can by giving to the campaign and/or helping in other ways.

For those looking to help in other ways - HelpingHands site is where we have setup a page for those who have offered to help in any way (in person or from afar). It will include many options to help and if you have other ideas, let me know.

Please note that visitors are not allowed at this time in the ICU and given the risk it may be a while before visitors are allowed. When this does happen, we will let you know.

Lastly, Dick would like to encourage everyone, especially this winter to take the flu very seriously and to seek medical care or the ER immediately if you feel you are not recovering as you should or something seems off. Although Abbey was resting, the flu turned into pneumonia and more in a matter of days.

Please continue to keep Abbey and the whole Brassfield family in your thoughts and prayers. Don’t hesitate to reach out and thank you again.

Warmest Regards,
Julie Crouse
