Brave Like McKenna

McKenna Royer is 10 years old and in 5th grade. McKenna is full of sunshine and always has a smile on her face. She plays volleyball and is involved in Girl Scouts.

McKenna's Story

In late July McKenna started having headaches, however, it was unclear what the root cause was until August 16, 2023.

As she attempted to get ready for her first day of school, she began vomiting and was unable to stand or walk. McKenna's mother Janell rushed her to her pediatrician's office to seek answers.

Once there her doctor referred her to Children’s Mercy in Independence for an MRI. It was at that point that a tumor was discovered in the lower rear portion of her brain. She was then rushed to Children’s Mercy ICU downtown for further evaluation.

McKenna had brain surgery on August 18th to remove the tumor. Pathology came back with news that they weren't anticipating, that the tumor was malignant. McKenna begins radiation in September and will continue with physical therapy to continue to gain strength in her recovery.
