Hi, my name is Caroline and I am Maddie Lutter’s sister and now the proud Auntie of Miss Maeve Elizabeth Lutter.
On January 24th Maddie who was 9 months pregnant noticed that her baby had not moved in a little while. Her mother’s intuition told her that something was off and she and Stephen went to the hospital to make sure everything was okay with their baby girl. Shortly after arriving at the hospital Maddie was rushed into an emergency c-section and Maeve Elizabeth Lutter was born.
Maeve’s umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck twice and she had to be revived by the doctors. Shortly after being born Maeve was rushed to the Nicu at Oshei Children’s hospital and put into a cooling tank in attempts to reduce the swelling of her brain. Maeve remained in the cooling tank for 72 hours. After being warmed Maeve had a MRI and was diagnosed with an HIE Severe brain injury and seizures. She is also on oxygen and will be getting a gtube for feeding.
Maeve has been in the nicu for two and half weeks and has been fighting her hardest to get better. At this time we do not know how much longer Maeves time will be in the nicu. Although we do not know at this time the full extent of Maeve’s injuries we know that she will need a lot of support.
The medical team has told Maddie and Stephen that everything is on Maeve’s timeline and to anticipate small strides with frequent set backs. While in the NICU she has already battled aspiration pneumonia and been diagnosed with hip subluxation due to hypertonia. The brain injury has hindered her gag reflex so she has yet to gain the ability to swallow. Due to this she deals with lots of secretions and is at constant risk for life threatening aspiration and desaturation. She will be unable to be cared for at a typical daycare due to her disability severity. Maeve’s journey of recovery will be long but with early intervention she will hopefully learns new skills with speech pathology and physical therapy to improve her quality of life.
They are anticipating extensive medical bills and her care will require Maddie and Stephen to take a lot of time off work.
Maddie and Stephen are two of the strongest people I know and they have had the hardest challenges that no parent should ever have to face. They say it takes a village to raise a child and that has never been more true than in Maeve case.
Please show your support for Brave Maeve, Maddie, and Stephen by donating to Maeve’s healing journey. This can help with things like hotel stays, hospital bills, extra equipment, and nursing care. Please also continue to send prayers and love their way it truly makes a difference.
Thank you so much!
Love Caroline
