Break the Stigma for Ricky Godoy !

Donation protected
Did you know that 1 in 5 adults in the United States experiences mental health issues in any given year?  In January of 2016, my big brother, Ricky, was diagnosed with bipolar schizoaffective disorder, which severely impacted not only his life but my entire family’s.

Ricky refused to let this diagnosis define him and went on to establish his own multimedia business, YODOG media (his last name backwards!).  Within the year, he became a thumbtack pro because of his genuine personality, outstanding services and extreme dedication.  However, my brother was much more than a businessman.

Ricky was fearless. He never judged; all he wanted to do was help. Whether it was providing a meal for the homeless or going on mission’s trips, Ricky found purpose in helping others. He found joy in the simplest things like going on late night runs to Wal Mart or drinking coffee with our aunt at Starbucks. Ricky was relentless in the pursuit of his dreams, his faith and his dedication for others.

Ricky was extremely honest, especially when it came to this diagnosis. He created an environment that fostered an open dialogue on mental health. On September 21st, 2017, my entire life flipped upside down when my brother took his life. This does not have to be the end result for everyone battling mental illness because it is treatable. As his sister, my goal is to continue his legacy by educating others and breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness. With the support of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, we want to create a community outreach event in Morristown, Ricky’s hometown. NAMI advocates for effective prevention, diagnosis, treatment, support, research and recovery that improves the quality of life of persons of all ages who are affected by mental illness.

With your support, we aim to raise awareness of mental health, educate others, develop coping skills for people who struggle with mental illness and to show those struggling that they are not alone. We want to hold a free event, which would include mental health advocates, yoga, activities, food and mental health resources and organizations all in an effort to stamp out the stigma. We aim to host this event in May 2018, which is Mental Health Awareness Month. All proceeds will go directly to funding this event in an effort to make it free for all.

Thank you in advance for your donations and support in our endeavor to educate others and break the stigma surrounding mental illness. In honor of my brother, Ricky Godoy, I’m asking you to see the person and not the illness.
