Breaking Barriers one step at a time

Greetings,
Tanya Walker founded Black Women Who Kayak+, LLC, a non-profit organization, in 2018. Black Women Who Kayak+ is empowering women, educating them, breaking down barriers for them to hold positions in places that you do not normally see women of color holding. By doing so, women will feel more inclined to share their discoveries with their families. In essence, we are a movement that seeks to make every space more welcoming, accessible, and educational in order to make it more appreciated. The goal is to ensure that everyone is familiar with the faces, the voices, and what we can achieve together. There is no sport or space which should ever be regarded or named as a "One Race". Having said this, Black Women Who Kayak+, LLC has partnered with some amazing businesses that align with our mission and vision. Among those partners, NOLS has generously sponsored one of our members to go on an expense-paid expedition to Alaska in August 2022. As part of making this happen, we are honored to be able to be part of this awesome member's journey.
Nonetheless, one of the biggest barriers that black and brown people face is doing things that they don't see other people of color doing. Outdoor expeditions like Alaska backpacking trips are 9 out of 10 times attended by just one person of color if that. However, in these situations, people of color tend to be more restricted in their speech. Due to their backgrounds, finances, careers, barriers, and myths, the experience is unrelatable to those who attend regular trips of this type. This is why we need your help to make this a lifetime opportunity for two young women of color. Missy Wilson, who is the Chapter Admin for the Houston BWWK+ chapter, will join Kim Fields on the once in a life time expedition. As for both of the ladies, we will have to pay for airfare, Missy's expedition cost, lodging before and after the trip, transportation from airport and back, food before the expedition starts and afterwards, and additional funds for any emergencies that isn't covered under BWWK+ insurance. We do not anticipate any emergency. However, if they arise. We at Black Women Who Kayak+ are fully responsible for any star flight rescues done for either Missy or Kim and we'll do everything to get them back home safely. That being said,
Black Women Who Kayak+ is for every woman who didn't feel like they belonged, stood out, or was made to feel as if they didn't exist. Because, we do! We hike. We bike. We kayak. We run. We swim and we ROAR when we're together.
