Breaking The Cycle of Homelessness and Hunger

There are a lot of ridiculous ideas out there, and here’s one: July and August 2024 I’m going to ride a bicycle across the country via the Lincoln Highway. Of course, I have personal reasons for taking on this challenge, but primarily I am taking my life's mission on the road, namely, doing what I can to house our unhoused and feed our food insecure neighbors.

To that end, along the way, I’ll be raising awareness, assisting, and advocating for our citizens who are suffering from the symptoms of extreme poverty. Specifically, in more than a dozen towns and cities en route from Washington DC to San Francisco, I will donate food, socks and other goods based on the needs of the local unhoused families and the organizations that serve them. In addition, an open letter will be sent and/or presented to local media and political leaders (see template below the line). Furthermore, local organizations doing the last mile work will be selected by a small committee to receive a donation. How much we can donate depends on a) how much this GoFundMe raises, and b) how many sponsors we get. In short, this ride aims to break the cycle of homelessness and hunger on main street America through awareness, assistance, and advocacy.

So, ridiculous? Absolutely. But not as ridiculous as the fact that there are more than two million unhoused people in the richest nation on Earth. Not as ridiculous as the fact that more than twenty percent of children in this country go hungry.

Transparency: approximately $4000.00 will be used for expenses (gear, inexpensive lodging and food for approximately 45 days, but the gear will be donated to a family in need in San Francisco); approximately 5% will go towards administrative costs (there is some promotion, etc. needed for effective implementation of the mission). Everything above that will go towards direct assistance, that is, food and clothing for those in need, as well as donations for the local organizations providing shelter for the homeless and food for the hungry. Here’s a thought: if this GoFundMe raises a billion dollars, more than 99.99% will go to people who need it, thus, sustainably, practically ending homelessness and hunger in more than a dozen towns and cities in the country. If we hit / exceed the $15,000.00 goal, we’ll be able to do a lot of good. So thank you for contributing, feel free to contact me.
