BREAST CANCER SUCKS!!

Living in Minneapolis gave me the opportunity to meet some good friends and have experiences I hadn’t had. Working in the service industry, I was one of the first to be furloughed due to Covid-19 in February. I could not get Medicaid nor could I get financial assistance. There was unemployment, but that ended in September. I returned to my home in New Orleans to find my bearings with my mother.

While in Minneapolis, my breast cyst grew out of proportion to the point it was hurting from within. I showed my Mom who immediately brought me to the ER. Bruising from the inside is not normal. Within 2 weeks I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Two weeks later lesions in my liver brought my diagnosis to Stage 4. I am furloughed, and cannot receive unemployment. Thankfully, Medicaid is able to pay for the medical treatments up to a point.

Stage 4 Breast Cancer – let that sink in. I’m 25 with no genetic predecessor for it. Going through chemo and hormone therapy is very tough. I am tired all the time. Mucositis makes it almost impossible to eat. As much as I try, I am unable to work. The medications make me ill, and I am tired all the time.

I came home to return to school to further myself. That is out of the question. I cannot work right now to save for my education fund. I cannot work right now to pay for basic living expenses. So far my mother has been paying for everything but she is also unemployed due to covid, and savings wont last forever. Helping me would help her help US. Things have been difficult as you may imagine.

I want to help my Mom, as we live through this chemical journey. I don’t want my family to be scared and hurt, but it’s hard for them not to be. I'm thankful that they are on this journey with me, because without them I’m pretty sure I’d not be able to beat cancer or be homeless. Moral support has been crucial and appreciated.

There is a battle ahead of me. I’ve only just begun this journey. I’m facing a few more months of chemo, a year of hormone therapy (at least), surgery, and reconstruction. Medicaid stated they may not cover all the costs. I know it won't be easy. I'll be sick and tired and tired of being sick, BUT I will fight with every ounce of strength in my body to stay for as long as humanly possible.

Everyone keeps saying "stay positive".... how could I not with friends and family like you. My family and friends have circled the wagons around me to reinforce that am not alone.
