Breast Cancer Education & Screening
Donation protected
As some of you may know, my mother was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer in the beginning of the summer. While this was a shock to all of this, we knew breast cancer was something that unfortunately runs in our family. Because of this, we were lucky enough to catch it in it's early stages due to frequent mammograms every 6 months.
However, so many women (and men!) either do not have the education or resources to access these preventative health care screenings, both locally and internationally. Moreover, although my family has been able to rely on our insurance to offset the costs of these services, I witnessed first hand how much pushback my mother received from her insurance company who time after time rejected her request to pay for medically necessary and routine surgeries. Luckily, she has dedicated her life's work to advocating for the needs of others as a disability attorney and knows how to win a fight. Sadly though, so many others - particularly low-income and marginalized populations - do not have the luxury of affordable health care or a law degree to meet their needs.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month coming up in October, my hope is to raise money for disadvantaged populations in order to provide them with increased access to early detection, education, and treatment such as through routine mammograms.
After much research, I've decide to split all donations in half, with part of proceeds going towards The National Breast Cancer Foundation and half going towards Project PINK BLUE.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation is located in the U.S. and partners with medical facilities across the country to provide free mammograms and diagnostic breast care services to underserved women through the NBCF National Mammography Program. In addition, the NBCF National Mammography Program requires that medical facilities within their network have the capacity to continue treatment after an abnormal finding or diagnosis of breast cancer. Additionally, over 80% of their funds are directed back into their program!
Project PINK BLUE is located in Nigeria and seeks to increase awareness, provide free cancer screenings, and support for cancer patients — specifically in rural areas. Additionally, despite the growing rates of breast cancer in Africa, it continues to receive low public health priority, largely because of limited resources and other pressing public health problems, including communicable diseases such as acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, malaria, and tuberculosis.
Growing up from a position of privilege, I believe it's important to give back both locally and globally as there remain huge inequalities between rich and poor countries. We are more alike than we are different and everyone deserves a fair chance at kicking cancer's ass.
Any and all donations help! Even one cent could end up providing someone with a second chance at life ❤️
With love & gratitude,
Kaitlyn
