Hi There! My name is Daniela Iurato, I am a 21 years old who has a mom who is suffering from PAP. What is PAP you ask.. well Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis, commonly known by the acronym PAP, is a rare lung disease characterized by the build-up of grainy material in the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs. This grainy material is composed mainly of phospholipid (a fat-like substance) and protein. Phospholipid and protein are the key components of lung surfactant, an important substance that coats the alveoli to prevent lung collapse and which promotes oxygen absorption by the lungs.
My mom has been suffering for 9 years now with this rare but life threatening disease. Not only is she suffereing with this lung complication but she also is anaphalxyis to scented products.
My mom can hardley go anywhere without being at high risk, everyday she considers to be the day she can potentially have a reaction to a scent and potentially die. I have given my mom over 100 epi pens over the past couple of years. I dont know about you but I think you have to be the strongest person in the world to battle that chance every single day! My mom is begining to miss out on major events like my University Graduation. Every time my mom goes out she has to wear a mask covering her beautiful smiling face! It is super difficult to watch people judge her and make fun of her when they don't even understand.
She has been intubated (placement of a flexible plastic tube into the trachea (windpipe) to maintain an open airway or to serve as a conduit through which to administer certain drugs.) 8 times! It is painful and she is heavily sedated so sometimes she loses 15 days of her life just sitting in the hospital not knowing what is happening. My mom has become a prisioner in her own body and it is so difficult to watch.
I would love to start this fundraiser as this doctor in the states is specializing in her condition. There are potenital surgeries and treatments that could help her and could make her healthy again! The only catch is that it is extremely expensive and is not covered under OHIP.
If you knew my mom you would know that she has a good heart! She helps others before she helps herself, and she would do anything for anyone that she loves, even strangers. She has put herself in danger countless times just to be supportive for her daughters. Now its time for us to help her!
