Brecken Straubs Heart Surgery

Her Story: Brecken is a beautiful, smart, seemingly normal 4 year old. At her 4 year well child check, her doctor heard abnormal heart sounds upon exam, therefore referred us for an echocardiogram (pictures of her heart). Then, in a whirlwind of appointments, we discovered that Brecken has a fenestrated ASD. The easiest way to explain this is that her atrial septum (the wall between the upper chambers of her heart) has multiple holes, like swiss cheese. Her defect covers 30mm of the 31mm that her atrial septum measures. This summer, Brecken will undergo surgery to repair all of these holes, so that her heart can function normally.
