Brenda’s Journey

Brenda has led a life full of challenges.  Now, at the age of 58, two years after adopting her newborn granddaughter, she is faced with the biggest and most difficult challenge of her life. Brenda has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Spindle Cell Sarcoma of the breast. This rare and devastating diagnosis has led to the most challenging journey Brenda will endure yet.

At the age of 14, Brenda left home and a life of neglect and abuse. She traveled on her own from Ohio to Florida to start a better life for herself, raising four children along the way.  Brenda’s love and passion for animals lead her to a career in animal welfare. We all have come to see the special soul she is, her passion for homeless animals shows every day in the way she cares for each one. She goes above and beyond to get all the care they require. Whether it be taking care of a neglected, abandoned, lost, injured or behaviorally challenged animal, she gives each the individual attention and care they so desperately need. Her job is difficult, heartbreaking and frustrating, but this is the career path she chose.  There may be higher paying jobs out there for someone with Brenda’s skill set, but she chooses to stay and fight for the animals of our somewhat small, rural county. This is where she can do the most good.

When Brenda adopted her granddaughter at birth, the challenges were great. This beautiful baby named Becca, was born addicted. There were many nights of no sleep, not just the newborn no sleep, but the screaming cries of a baby going through withdrawal. There were hospital stays, where Brenda would stay up all night and then go to work in the morning. The pain of watching Becca suffer and the physical toll on Brenda was a lot to bear, but she never complained, and they made it through together. Becca is now a happy, thriving toddler and the love of Brenda's life!

This Monday, March 2, 2020 she will check in to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa where a mastectomy will be performed.  She will then go through chemotherapy and radiation treatments.  We all know Brenda is a fighter - her faith and love for family, friends and animals are her life's beacon - but it’s no secret that she faces a long, difficult road ahead. She will worry about taking unpaid time off from work, medical bills, mortgage payments, paying utilities, putting food on the table and probably foremost on her mind, Becca’s future.

It is the wish of her supporters that Brenda fight this battle with as little stress and worry as possible.  Please consider helping this wonderful, caring, deserving woman who puts everyone’s needs before her own get through this most difficult time.

Out of respect for Brenda's privacy please do not publicly share her story on social media - Thank you!
