BRENDA ARTS: A POC YOUTH ARTS PROGRAM
Donation protected
BRENDA ARTS is the definitive Afrocentric art program for POC youth.
BRENDA ARTS is an intersectional art program geared for POC youth and involves history, theory, media literacy, and production. BRENDA ARTS' goal is to create an outlet for a new Black cinematic expression and boost the voices of marginalized groups. Juxtaposed to the white supremacy built into the world of the arts, BRENDA offers a strong alternative. BRENDA ARTS services students aged 10-19 and is partnered with KairosPDX, KSMOCA, The NM Bodecker Foundation, and the Portland Art Museum. BRENDA ARTS is also happy to announce BRENDA LAB, a tv show based off the program which investigates Black art and culture. It is being produced in partnership with the organizations stated previously.
THE TEACHER
Created by critically acclaimed filmmaker Spencer Garland, the program comes out of personal devotion to the art. The program is named after his late mother Brenda who encouraged him to pursue art and also taught art in schools. BRENDA ARTS was born out of Garland's alienating experience during film school. He witnessed a lack of POC inclusion and the elevation of films which emphasized white mundanity. Garland strives to instill filmmaking with meaning, purpose, and a sense of urgency.
WHERE THE FUNDING GOES
Funding goes to the continuous upkeep of the program and funds will also be allocated to the aforementioned BRENDA LAB tv show which is slated for production in Summer 2021.
