A Word About the Author * of the Brevity of Life
The Brevity of Life booklet was written by Steve Dawson. Steve was moved to write this booklet after his younger sister, Jane, died at age 33. Many of her friends, as well as many in her extended family who remained were left reeling and devastated. Some expressed anger and outrage at God. Although Steve was “hurting” too, he also knew that in the plans of our Creator God there is hope beyond the grave. This hope can be found in God’s Word, the Holy Bible.
At Jane's funeral, the Lord gave Steve an analogy of a parking meter to cause him to realize just how very precious a GIFT, Life is. You see, we are all on "metered time", just like with a Parking Meter. Only, this time, our Creator God, puts in His priceless "Celestial Coins" known as "Time," (we cannot buy even one more second of "Time!"), into our individual parking meters, and that then begins the process of a personal countdown clock to start ticking away, for each person's lifetime timeline . He buys us the "Time", and we are on His Dime! We are all in his debt. Life is a Gift! So, don't be angry at God, the giver and sustainer of all life, when a loved one dies, or "Expires," as the Parking Meter sign flashes the word, "Expired," when the purchased time is up. Rather, we should say, "Thank you, God, for the gift of life; for the gift of "Time" down here that this loved-one shared with us before they died. Be grateful for the precious "Time" He bought and paid for this loved-one. We will all, one day die. Someone has stated, "Yesterday is History. Tomorrow is a Mystery. But today, is a Gift, and that is why it is called The Present!" Today is your Present!
Steve’s purpose in writing and publishing this booklet was simply to come alongside and encourage these people, who are now hurting at the loss of a loved one or a friend. These folks may wonder, or have questions about their relationship with God. Both Steve and his wife, Barbara have shared these realizations verbally through the years with folks, and have been encouraged by friends to print these "shared thoughts" for wider distribution to others. They considered it a real answer to prayer when, after reading The Brevity Of Life transcript, a Christian donor offered to pay for the professional printing costs.
This little “take-along with you booklet” was designed, written, and self-published as a non-denominational Christian message of hope and assurance. The selected Scripture verses are quoted from both The Old Testament and the New Testament of the Bible, and are ones that are universally accepted by all Christian churches. This booklet has been requested by both Protestant and Catholic churches. It is presently being utilized today by persons who have read it, and then desire additional copies to be shared with others. It is also being used in hospital visitation, in hospice situations, at funeral homes, and at funeral memorial services.
Steve’s suggestion follows: “My strong recommendation is for folks to read The Brevity of Life message through in one quiet sitting, where they will be undisturbed, and where these selected verses which contain the Biblical truths of reality, challenge, and hope, can sink in. There is continuity to it. It is perhaps a ten minute read. If you find you could use more booklets, I will send more, just ask." To encourage the widest distribution possible, this booklet is available for a donation, for use by you or your organization. Donations received will go exclusively toward the expenses of publishing and distributing additional copies of The Brevity Of Life.
May God Bless You,
Steve Dawson
