Brexxi's emergency leg amputation

Today, 12/4/23, Brexxi had to have an emergency rear left leg amputation. For those who don't know her, Brexxi is our special needs rescue from St Maarten. She is partially paralyzed in her back end. When she was approx 6 wks old her back was badly broken at the hands of an awful person. We took her in as a foster when she was approx 10 wks old to help try to rehab her as much as possible. She never regained any function in her left leg and very minimal function in her right leg. Through the yrs she has gone at the left leg and given herself wounds. 2 weeks ago she licked a hole in the heel of that leg. It suddenly became infected. We rushed her to the vet, she was put on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories along with daily bandage changes. We were in constant contact with her amazing Vet, sending daily updates, video logs and face time chats. Her foot was looking so much better after 10 days when it suddenly took a turn for the worst late yesterday into this am. The circulation to her foot stopped and the infection exploded. We brought her to Central Animal Hospital ER this am and it was confirmed she needed her leg amputated asap. Brexxi had the amputation surgery this late this afternoon and is doing well thankfully. They removed her entire leg and hip joint as well as tried to build a little cushion for her pelvis with the tiny bit of muscle mass she had in that leg. Due to her paralysis, she has very little "meat" on her bones to protect her pelvis. Her wheelchair will need to be modified in the coming weeks to accommodate the loss of her leg. We had to buy a baby crib that she will spend the next several wks in confinement that CJ is modifying right now since she cannot be in a crate. She's our baby girl, and we will do everything we need to to get her thru this. We hate that we have to create this fund, but we were not prepared for a $7100+ emergency amputation surgery.
