Brian and Carrie Makar Family Funeral & Education
Hi. My name is John La Porta and I am fundraising for Brian and Carrie Makar and their family of four boys. I was Brian's Private Pilot Instructor, a friend of Carrie's, and I am here to support their four boys Frank, George, Gus, and Ralph.
People die every day. It’s so commonplace that we don’t even pay attention anymore. It’s only when those names become actual people that the rest of us take notice.
Once again, life has proven how fragile it can be. Thursday, July 1st, claimed the lives of two very dear friends in the prime of their lives: Brian and Carrie Makar.
I met Brian in 2015 when he was working on his Private Pilot license at Boeing Field. At the time, he was only dating Carrie, but when we talked, it was obvious that they were very much in love. After passing his check ride, he immediately started lessons for his Instrument license. Brian’s goal was to be a safe pilot so that he could feel comfortable flying his soon-to-be family around.
Then he and Carrie got married and he became the instant father to four boys. It was a role that he took to like a fish to water, and it was obvious that the boys loved him back.
Last week, they left the boys at home and took a flying vacation to Glacier National Park. Every day, Carrie posted photos of the good time they were having and how spoiled Brian was making her feel. In her words: “Carrie’s spoiled life meter- holding steady at dangerously high”
They left Glacier and stopped in Missoula, Montana, for fuel. Unfortunately, a few minutes after takeoff, while climbing to altitude, they crashed and were killed.
Two nicer people would be hard to find. Brian was liked by everyone that knew him. Carrie was a special education middle school teacher who was loved by her class and who made everything around her better. The world is a darker place without them in it. And their four boys have been left without their parents.
As bad as being abruptly torn from this life is, it’s also a fact that dying is expensive. Funeral costs vary widely (burial vs cremation, plot of land vs scattering, whether or not services are held, etc) and range from $2,500 to $8,000 each, and then there’s the issue of bringing them home to Seattle from Montana.
Also consider that all of their assets are now frozen until their estate is settled, yet the bills are still coming due. Mortgage, utilities, and taking care of the kids continues while any insurance payouts are months down the road.
With that in mind, we’re hoping for donations to help the family. Not only for their immediate needs, but to set up an education fund for the four boys. I know I plan to donate, please consider helping this family during their grief over losing these two-special people.
Please note: All funds donated will initially be spent on cremation, transporting Brian and Carrie Makar from Missoula Montana (including flights or rental vehicles required), paying funeral expenses, and bills. Any remaining donations after cremation, transport, funeral, and bills will be equitably split between the four boys for college or education. Costs associated with setting up these accounts, for the boys, will come from this Go Fund Me as well. Brian Makar's Sister in Law Rachel Holmes has been identified as the beneficiary of the Go Fund Me donated funds and will be using a spreadsheet to itemize each and every expense, bill, and college or education funding for Brian and Carrie and their sons Frank, George, Gus, and Ralph.
May I ask you to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns at [phone redacted].
Thank you for your donation, thoughts, and prayers for Brian and Carrie Makar and their four boys in this most difficult of times in their lives.
Sincerely,
John R. La Porta
