I am Laura Tharpe Brian’s mother, and I want to establish a foundation in Brian’s name to help young adults with rare cancers like Brian’s. At the age of 34, Brian had several months of back pain. He went to numerous doctor appointments and emergency rooms asking for help with his back pain and was told he was young, healthy and would heal with doctors assuming his pain was from his active fitness lifestyle. Brian went to the his primary doctor several times and his doctor kept denying him an MRI. Even though Brian had excellent medical insurance Brian had to call and schedule his own MRI and bypass his Dr. and insurance and pay $2000 out of his pocket to get an MRI done. That MRI showed his excruciating back pain was cancer that had disintegrated his discs and backbone which immediately needed major surgery with pins and rods to restore his back. During this time, Brian was diagnosed with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma in December 2021. After undergoing many chemotherapy fusions, surgeries, and radiation treatments, Brian lost his courageous battle on October 23, 2022.
Throughout Brian’s journey, we have realized these young people with rare cancers are often discovered too late. Cancer is a highly complex disease and people diagnosed go through many life changes as the disease progresses. I want to help young adults that are in treatment in my son’s name to ease some of the financial burdens on them during this life-changing event.
