Brian Pace on the Road to Recovery
Donation protected
Brian Pace is on the road again, but it is the road to recovering from a severe bike accident
How it Happened
Brian was on his weekly 5 am training ride where he had the right of way at an intersection. A work van took a left turn in front of Brian, striking him on his left side and knocking him down an incline where he was only stopped by hitting a cluster of trees. His bike lay close to him with his shoes still clipped into the pedals
The driver of the van attempted to help Brian but could not due to Brian's injuries. The fire and rescue teams were first on the scene, followed by the paramedics and police. They worked to remove his helmet, placed him on the gurney, and finally got him into the ambulance to be transported to Wake Med Trauma Center.
Injury Assessment
Brian's x-rays revealed extensive injuries: 1) Multiple fractures and dislocation of the hip socket and pelvis, 2) Multiple left rib fractures, 3) Broken Left Arm, 4) Broken Right Knee, 5) 5" laceration on the left hand, and 6) 4" laceration on left knee
Over the next 24 hours, Brian had multiple procedures to attach the hip ball to the hip socket, repair the hip socket and pelvis, reset the bones for the left arm that was put in a cast, and apply stitches to the lacerations. The right knee and ribs were left to heal over time from the trauma.
During all these procedures, Brian needed 5 liters of blood. This process put a great strain on his kidneys, which were dangerously close to failing. Finally, the last 2 liters of blood put his kidneys almost back within normal range. But he is still not in the clear because of the risk of internal bleeding. The doctors are hoping that the internal bleeding stops on its own. So we must sit back, hope, and pray for the best for Brian.
How to Assist Brian
This GoFundMe Campaign has been set up to offset out-of-pocket medical costs and Brian's loss of earnings. At this point, Brian is looking at losing 8-10 months of income from coaching as a full-time Table Tennis Coach.
Brian has been approved for Wake Med's "ln-Hospital" Physical Therapy. "In-Hospital Physical Therapy" vs "At Home Physical Therapy" has several advantages: Brian has 24/7 access to medical staff, less burdensome on his family, and it allows Brian to focus full time on recovering.
This GoFundMe Campaign has a financial goal of $100,000. Your contributions will allow Brian to afford to start down the road to economic recovery. In addition, your contributions will offset the cost of providing for his wife and child. Donations will also be used to pay for ongoing out-of-pocket costs for "In-Hospital Medical Therapy."
Instead of creating multiple Campaigns for Brian, Bowmar Sports and Kansas City Table Tennis are calling on Table Tennis Communities coast to coast and cycling clubs nationwide to support Brian and his Family in their time of need!
