Brian White Memorial Award-Athletic Achievement

Exciting news! On March 26th, the inaugural Brian White Memorial Award for Athletic Achievement will be given to a member of the Algonquin Wolves Women's Basketball Team. The recipient will be chosen by a committee that includes the team coach, with the selection criteria based on the qualities that Brian prized in a player. Brayden and Melanie, along with their families, have been invited to attend the presentation. We'll be sure to share any pictures we have from that evening on here.

For friends and family to make Brayden and Melanie's dream of honouring their father this way come true so quickly is nothing short of incredible. We are only about $2,000 short of the funds required to ensure that this award is handed out in perpetuity. Once that amount has been reached, any additional funds will go toward increasing the amount of the yearly award. Currently, the award amount is set at $500.

Brian was a much loved and respected, long-time Coach for Algonquin Thunder Women's Basketball and a former Thunder player himself. The player who wins this award demonstrates the qualities that Brian, known to so many as simply "Coach", valued in a player. He appreciated players who showed grit, determination, work ethic and perseverance but, above all, he appreciated hustle. The player who earns this award shows up at every game or training session with a positive attitude, ready to give 100% and sets a great leadership example for everyone. This award goes to the kind of player that Coach loved having on his team. The kind of player that Brian White was known to be.

To ensure his legacy lives on, his children have established this award to be given each year to an Algonquin Wolves Women’s player who best exemplifies the qualities Brian valued in athletes he coached and in himself. An agreement has been formalized with Algonquin College's Advancement and Strategy Office. This office is responsible for managing donations, bursaries, scholarships and giving in memoriam.
