Briana's Global Autism Project Trip - Fall 2022

Donation protected
Hi everyone! As many of you know, I'm currently a BCBA who works with children with autism. I've been in the field for several years and I love the work I do. I get the opportunity to work with families every day as they navigate their child's diagnosis and help their children become more independent. This includes a wide range of skills: first requests, learning how to brush their teeth, making friends, play skills, how to communicate their needs while staying safe, getting dressed, job skills, and so much more.

My families are incredibly lucky to live in the United States, where autism services are very prevalent and there is not a negative stigma related to autism. However, in many developing countries, this is not the case. In some countries, autism services are very rare and inaccessible to many families. In some countries, children with autism are hidden away because autism is seen as a disease, or even as if their child is possessed. It is estimated that there are approximately 70 million people in the world with autism, and up to 85% of them live in developing countries. Of those, it is estimated that 8 out of 10 children with autism have limited or NO access to appropriate education.

This is where Global Autism Project and SkillCorps comes in. I have the opportunity to travel to (hopefully!) Ecuador in October 2022 with a SkillsCorps team to use my skill set and knowledge of autism services to train staff at a Global Autism Project partner site that serves children with autism.

What is SkillCorps? What will I be doing?

SkillCorps team members travel to Global Autism Project partner sites all over the world! SkillCorps teams are made up of skilled professionals and Autistic self-advocates working in the field of autism education. Our teams are trained and prepared to support educators, leaders, parents, and advocates working in their own communities.

As a SkillCorps member, I will travel to a Global Autism Project partner site with a team of colleagues for two weeks – where we will work alongside local educators, advocates, and leaders to execute a project from start to finish!

From creating locally-led parent support groups – to training teachers in inclusive classroom practices, our team will work with the local change-makers to ensure our work is sustainable and scalable.

Join me! Let's create a world in which all people with autism can thrive!

Your donation will go towards helping support the partner site I travel to. This includes ongoing support and training for staff year round, outreach training, two annual autism summits, and more. The goal of Global Autism Project is to ensure that these partner sites worldwide have continued access to trainings, further education, and the resources needed to continue providing quality, effective services and education for the children they serve.

*If you do not feel comfortable donating via website, I can also accept donations via cash, venmo, and check. All donations will be compiled before my trip and given to Global Autism Project.
