Bridge4Unity is a grassroots movement committed to dismantling racism and white supremacy. We formally united January 28-30, 2019, on the Gullah Islands of Beaufort, South Carolina with participants from three states: the Pioneer Valley, Massachusetts; Beaufort County, South Carolina; and Letcher County, Kentucky. Through structured face-to-face dialogues, this diverse group of people of African, Indigenous, and European descent delved into our personal and societal experiences, using dialogue as a means of working toward racial reconciliation, healing, and dismantlement of all interlocking systems of oppression. We believe the task of building genuine and authentic relationships across racial and cultural lines is crucial to the future well-being of our world and we seek partnerships in other communities to continue these dialogues as a means of social transformation.
“…if we ever want to actualize those lofty ideals of individual freedom and justice for all, we have to listen differently, and learn deeply, and stretch ourselves, unless, in the end, democracy is no more than an abstract ideal forever beyond our reach…”
Gloria Graves Holmes
Our goal is to raise travel funds and hosting costs so we are able to experience courageous dialogue and cultural exchange between participants. The cultural exchange will involve participants staying in the homes of the host group, a dialogue session each day, and a public meeting in each community.
