Hi, my name is Takkeem Morgan, and when I was 10 years old, I was separated from my family and placed into the foster care system where i remained until college.
It was a heartbreaking experience that changed my life forever. As a preteen Black male, I was told by my family case manager that options for a foster home willing to accept me were limited, so a group home with over 100 other kids would be my new home. Just when I thought things couldn't get worse, I found myself living in what felt like a prison for children.
But one day, my family case manager told me that she had found just one foster home that was willing to take a chance with me. That experience saved me from a lifetime of trauma.
My foster mothers, Ms. Carol and Ms. Darcell, were bridges of healing for me and my family. They were a safe haven for us. They welcomed my mother home from prison and helped us heal as a family. Foster families all across the state of Indiana are doing the same thing for countless families, and their hard work can sometimes go unnoticed.
Today, in Indiana, there are over 13,000 children in the foster care system, and many of them are waiting for loving foster homes. Foster families play a crucial role in providing stability, love, and care for children in need. The demand for therapeutic and co-care foster homes is high, and it's vital that we work together to support these families and the children they serve so that they can heal.
Over the next three months, I will travel around the state, working with local Licensed Child Placement Agencies to personally thank foster families, especially those who are serving the therapeutic and co-care (working with birth family) and reunification needs of children and families. By sharing their stories and highlighting their incredible work, I hope to inspire more people to consider becoming a therapeutic foster home for a child in need.
The "Bridges of Healing" project is a storytelling initiative highlighting the success stories of 25 exceptional therapeutic foster homes in Indiana that embrace therapeutic, co-care and reunification needs of children.
Your support as a sponsor will enable us to compensate foster families for their time and ensure that these powerful stories reach a wider audience. Your support will also be used for a surprise gift for foster families who we visit with to encourage and enable their ongoing service to child and families in the foster care system.
By sponsoring this project, you will help:
-Raise awareness about the importance of therapeutic foster care, co-care and reunification support in our community
-Encourage more families to consider becoming therapeutic foster parents
-Provide valuable resources and support for participating foster families
-Create a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable children and families in Indiana
Together, we can make a difference and help create a brighter future for children and families.
Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit Bridges of Healing Project in conjunction with Hands of Hope, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
