Brightmoor Makers "Mobile Maker Space"

We, the Brightmoor Makers, are seeking funding to outfit our bus and turn it into a mobile maker space for use in communities throughout Detroit, MI.

 

The Brightmoor Makers are a group of students and teachers joined in a hands-on educational program based out of Detroit Community High School and under the direction of Sunbridge International Collaborative, a 501c3 Non-Profit. We have been active in our community on the West-side of Detroit for over a decade and have pursued learning opportunities in gardening, fixing and remodeling bicycles, carving wood signs, painting murals and even building small structures.

 

Remodeling our bus will allow the Brightmoor Makers to visit communities across Detroit and share our skills with them. It’ll give us workbenches, space to store our tools, plan, teach and design, and showcase more advanced tools like a desktop laser cutter and CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) router.

 

The bus is already licensed and insured. Our team members have already given it a beautiful paint job making it stand out as a "creative beast" -- both visuall and metaphorically throughout the Detroit community. Inside, we're ready to build and install the necessary equipment with customized CAD layouts, as shown below.

 

At current, we are seeking funding to further develop the bus. Our next tasks are to strip down the remainder of the interior, repair the floor throughout and build new cabinets, run electrical wiring and prepare the vehicle overall for future designs/developments.

 

No "Maker Space" would be complete without a variety of professional tools. Our current designs include various hand tools, a Laser Cutter, a CNC Router, CNC Vinyl Cutter, and a Dust Collection system installed within the bus. For power, our designs include a pair of onboard generators to provide truly mobile power in lieu of drawing traditional power from a site location. The bus will reside within the Detroit Community Schools attached warehouse facility, providing immediate access for our team members as well as providing essential covered security for the bus indoors, year-round.
