Some years ago, in a conversation with Asbury Park’s Mayor Ed Johnson, we pondered the question: how is it that the Jersey Shore has produced so much great music? “It’s as if there’s a beat underground,” Johnson declared. Who knows, maybe if we listen carefully, we can still feel that beat.
If there’s another place that’s got musical magic, without question, it’s the Mississippi Delta. We know that our Jersey musicians would agree, were it not for Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and countless other blues pioneers, chances are we wouldn’t have the rock ‘n’ roll music that so many of us grew up with. While these early blues artists are no longer with us, there’s a new generation in the Delta that’s following in their footsteps.
As part of our Jersey Shore Jazz & Blues Foundation Community Outreach, we’re extending our reach to forge a musical/cultural/educational partnership with the Mississippi Delta community. To that end we’ve invited none other than Clarksdale, Mississippi’s finest, Anthony “Big A” Sherrod and the Allstars to New Jersey – to perform, share how they honor their musical roots and more ... keepin’ the blues alive! You won’t want to miss this June 1-3, 2023 weekend event – but first, we’ve got to get them here!
We promise you won’t be disappointed. In fact, you may be making plans to join us as we travel to Mississippi next year! Please consider donating to foster this exciting partnership and help us to bring “Big A” to NJ!
