Our kids are growing up in a world that is very different from the one we grew up in. Social media can be a positive influence when used correctly, but more often, in these formative years, it plays a more destructive role that can lead to social isolation, bullying, destructive comparisons, and deflated self-worth.
The following facts were shared in the Dallas Morning News just last month, all of which directly affect the children and youth in our Trophy Club community.
• The Texas Department of State Health Services reports that a person between the ages of 10 and 24 dies by suicide at the rate of more than one per day in the state and two per week in the Dallas-Fort Worth area
• Almost 18% of Texas high school students reported seriously thinking about suicide, 14.5% said they had made a plan and 12% said they had made an attempt, according to the state’s latest Youth Risk Behavioral Survey, conducted in 2017
• Suicide is the second leading cause of death in Texas for young people ages 10 to 24, according to the CDC
There are many factors involved in these statistics, but several of them stem from the harms of social media and cyber bullying that wreak havoc on teen mental and emotional health. We are a group of Trophy Club parents who are gravely concerned about our kids and feel passionately that we must do something to combat this.
A social activist named Collin Kartchner started a campaign in 2018 to #SavetheKids from social media and screen addiction's negative effect on their mental and emotional health. His message has resonated with the masses. He has since spoken at TEDX, to corporations such as Nike, Adidas, the American Association of Pediatrics, and to over 300,000 students and parents across the country through school and community events. His goal is to help teens rise above social media comparison, negativity, cyber bullying, and the stress of being perfect.
Collin's speaking schedule is booked 14-18 months out, but our Trophy Club community has the rare opportunity to bring him here to speak on March 26 and 27, 2020, giving school assemblies as well as hosting a youth night and a parent night. Because this opportunity won't come up again for some time, we are scrambling to raise enough funds to get him here and need to raise $10,000 before these dates. The funds will be used to cover Collin's travel and speaking costs and will make the assemblies, parent night, and teen night free and available for anyone to attend.
This is a unique chance for our kids to hear a life changing message, but we are counting on your help to make it happen. We love our community, the amazing schools and teachers we have, as well as our incredible local businesses. We know that you are just as passionate about our kids, their futures and their health as we are, and we need to come together as a community to bring him here. Please donate what you can!
