Greetings and welcome! My name is Susana Raine and I assist in the volunteer-run Dementia Education Initiative in Costa Rica, created and organized by Katya De Luisa, a dementia educator/consultant, residing 45 years in Costa Rica and author of “Journey through the Infinite Mind: The Science and Spirituality of Dementia.”
The initiative focuses on Costa Rican communities where dementia information and resources are scarce. The monthly online dementia education talks offered through the Fundacion Partir con Dignidad, a local hospice organization, has steadily increasing viewer numbers. Last year 250 people participated from throughout the country.
Internationally Katya also offers online workshops, interviews, and informational videos. www.dementialearninginstitute.com
Katya´s presentations feature practical and innovative information in Spanish and English for persons caring for people with dementia and include dementia information on causes, symptoms, behaviors and perception. They also include tips to increase and maintain communication and improve caregiving. Presentations are free of charge
KATYA’S APPROACH
While most dementia educators focus on the “management” of the person being cared for, Katya’s approach starts with the basics of brain function, explaining how dementia damage to different parts of the brain causes specific types of behavior. Her information enables the listener to understand the inner world of those with dementia and gain a greater sense of empathy by “stepping into their shoes.”
PRESENTLY:
This initiative began in 2020, funded primarily out-of-pocket and supplemented by gifts from many generous individuals. In 2023 we were able to purchase much needed audio/visual equipment with contributions received through GoFundMe.
For 2025 Katya is continuing the online monthly Spanish dementia education presentations and is developing online English talks and workshops intended for international audiences. She is continuing and has several scheduled in-person talks in local communities and Expat groups and clubs throughout Costa Rica.
The donations we gratefully receive through GoFundMe will be used for:
1. Printed materials: dementia and resource information handouts and flyers
2. Ongoing technical assistance for the live and recorded dementia education sessions.
3. Printing in Costa Rica of the published Spanish version of Katya’s book, Viaje a Traves de la Mente Infinita where printing is considerably less expensive. This will allow us to supply local libraries and make it more affordable for local Spanish speakers. It’s presently only available on Amazon.

Katya offers monthly live online talks in Spanish on dementia through with this Costa Rican organization which was created to support low-income families needing hospice support. The addition of talks on dementia has been very successful and is attracting a large following.

¡Un saludo y bienvenidos! Mi nombre es Susana Raine y asisto en la iniciativa Educación sobre la Demencia, una actividad de voluntarios en Costa Rica creada y organizada por Katya De Luisa, educadora/consultora en el tema de la demencia, que ha residido 45 años en Costa Rica. Ella es autora del libro "Viaje a Través de la Mente Infinita: La Ciencia y la Espiritualidad de la Demencia".
La iniciativa se enfoca en comunidades costarricenses donde la información y recursos sobre la demencia son escasos. Sus charlas mensuales en línea y en vivo con la Fundación Partir con Dignidad (https://partircondignidad.org/) ofrecen educación sobre la demencia a un público en constante aumento. La Fundación es una organización costarricense al servicio de adultos mayores vulnerables y sus familias mediante cuidados paliativos. El año pasado participaron 250 personas de todo el país en las charlas de Katya.

Las presentaciones cuentan con información práctica e innovadora en español e inglés para quienes cuidan a personas con demencia. Incluyen información sobre las causas, los síntomas, los comportamientos y la percepción en la demencia. EL ENFOQUE DE KATYA
Si bien la mayoría de los educadores sobre la demencia enfocan en el "manejo" de la persona que se cuida, el enfoque de Katya empieza con los conceptos básicos de la función cerebral, explicando cómo el daño de la demencia en diferentes partes del cerebro causa tipos específicos de comportamiento. Su información permite al oyente comprender el mundo interior de las personas con demencia y obtener un mayor sentido de empatía: "me puedo poner en sus zapatos".
ACTUALMENTE:
Esta iniciativa comenzó en el año 2020, financiada principalmente con sus propios recursos, complementada por donaciones de muchas personas generosas. En el año 2023 pudimos comprar equipos audiovisuales muy necesarios gracias a las contribuciones recibidas a través de GoFundMe.
Para 2025, Katya continúa con las charlas mensuales en español y en vivo sobre educación sobre la demencia, y actualmente está desarrollando charlas y talleres de inglés en línea para servir a públicos internacionales. Ella continúa y tiene varias charlas presenciales programadas en comunidades locales, como también con grupos y clubes de extranjeros en todo Costa Rica.
Las donaciones que recibimos con mucha gratitud apoyarán lo siguiente:
1. Materiales impresos: folletos y folletos de información sobre la demencia y los recursos disponibles a cuidadores
2. Asistencia técnica continua para las sesiones educativas sobre la demencia, tanto en vivo como grabadas.
3. Impresión en Costa Rica de la versión en español del libro de Katya, Viaje a Traves de la Mente Infinita, donde la impresión es considerablemente menos costosa. Esto nos permite abastecer a las bibliotecas locales y hacerlo más asequible para la población local. Actualmente solo está disponible en Amazon.
