Bring Fortune's Story to Light: Support His Mural

Tax deductible
Introduction:
Embark on a journey back in time with us to honor Fortune, an enslaved man whose life and story encapsulate a vital yet often overlooked chapter of American history. The Fortune Man Mural Project in Waterbury, CT, is more than just a work of art; it's a profound statement of recognition, education, and healing. This mural is not only a tribute to Fortune’s life but also a canvas for our community's commitment to confronting and understanding our shared past.

In collaboration with a remarkable team of community partners, artists, and historians, we are poised to transform a significant piece of history into an engaging, educational mural. Your support will bring to life a project that offers a window into the 18th century, fosters dialogue about racial history, and pays homage to those whose stories have been marginalized. This is your opportunity to be part of a historic endeavor that not only acknowledges a painful past but also paves the way for healing and unity.

About Fortune and His Significance:
In the late 1700s, Fortune lived in Waterbury, CT, where he was enslaved by Dr. Preserved Porter, a local bone surgeon. Despite the commonplace nature of slavery during this period, Fortune's story stands out due to the treatment of his remains after his death. Rather than being laid to rest with dignity, Fortune's body became a subject for anatomical study by Dr. Porter. His bones were preserved, studied, and passed down through generations, even displayed in a museum, without any regard for his humanity or the wishes of his family.

It wasn't until centuries later, in 2013, that Fortune's remains were finally given a proper burial, with a ceremony that acknowledged his life and story. This mural project aims to further rectify the neglect Fortune faced both in life and death by providing a public space for reflection, education, and acknowledgment.

The mural will not only tell Fortune's story but also serve as a reminder of the many untold stories of enslaved individuals. It's a step toward recognizing our history's complexities and the need to address and learn from these difficult truths. Our hope is that through this mural, Fortune's life and legacy will continue to educate and inspire future generations.

Our Vision for the Mural:
Envisioned as a beacon for education and reflection, the Fortune Man Mural will be a significant cultural landmark in Waterbury, sparking discussions on racial history and social justice, and serving as a catalyst for community engagement.
