Bring Mari and Niko home - Save their house on a hill

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Stella and I'm looking to fund the renovation of my parents' self-built house with a small olive grove on top of a hill in greece. Since they built this little home in the 1990ies before I was born, the hill became listed and the area is now a nature reserve. Unfortunately, the house is currently uninhabitable.

A bit about the history of this house: My birthday in 1995 came with a catastrophe - on a very hot summer day the whole hill with all its beautiful flora burned down. Mari and Niko lost their pets to the fire and had to save the house, replanted and sowed everything.
As I grew older and my little brother was born, Mari and Niko made the decision to move to my mother's homeland, germany. They wanted us to have better educational opportunities and better chances in life. In the meantime my grandfather moved into the house on the hill. Unfortunately, in his old age, it was no longer possible for him to maintain the house and carry out cleaning work. We flew to Greece as often as possible to take care of my grandfather and the condition of the house. As he needed care, we organized a move to a small apartment in the village at the foot of the hill and provided him with a caregiver. When this was no longer enough, Mari and Niko invested almost all their money in a retirement home, because my grandfather's pension was insufficient. Much needed help (personal as well as financial) from Niko's siblings who were living in Greece all the time failed to materialize. My grandpa died in 2023. The siblings also never took part in the funeral and all the things that had to be arranged in this context.

At the same time, my parents tried to become masters of the necessary renovation work on the - now empty - house. My parents were disappointed several times. Several thousand euros have already flowed into the roof of the house. In total, the work had to be redone three times because the craftsmen were unreliable or used unsuitable material. The last success was the renovation of the bathroom. There is now a functional sink, shower and toilet (A few basic human needs are covered - yay). Unfortunately, the water supply still has to be from a water tank next to the house, so they are always dependent on water supplies from a farmer. The reason for this is that the water supply by the supplier is only ensured up to a height that is below the house. From this point, the water has to be transported uphill by a private pump. All associated pipes were destroyed by an excavator during construction work on a property in the neighborhood. The city does not pay for this, as the pipes are officially private property.

Now Mari and Niko are left with this house in need of renovation, which should already be a home in peaceful nature for their retirement.

ToDos:
  • Doors and windows have to be replaced
  • The walls need to be reinforced
  • Wooden pillars supporting the roof are rotten
  • The floor must be thoroughly cleaned, straightened and resealed
  • A solution for the reliable water supply must be found. The same applies to the hot water supply
  • And then, of course, all the furniture, furnishings and maybe a bit of decoration for the feel-good factor are missing

Every donation helps – and every gesture of solidarity counts.
Thank you for being part of a united community.
Thank you for believing in kind humanity.
And thank you for standing with Mari and Niko.
