Bring Membean to Danbury High School

Hi, my name is Justin Hitchcock, and I, along with Doug Beallivau and Thomas Porcelli, am hoping to increase our students' post-secondary success through the implementation of Membean.

We are struggling to get our non-readers a high school vocabulary. This vocabulary program not only customizes the vocabulary to students' individual grade levels, but it keeps track of successes and failures to motivate kids to want to learn.

As the largest high school in the state (and the lowest per-pupil expenditure in our state), our school serves a unique and diverse population of students. More than half of our students are Latinx and more than half qualify for free or reduced lunch. Membean provides our students with the differentiation, scaffolding, and accommodations they need to support their word retention and application. This project will provide approximately 400 students with access to Membean for the 2023-2024 school year.

While we had monumental success with the platform in the 2022-2023 school year, we no longer have the funding to secure the program for another year. On average our students are demonstrating a year or more's growth on their reading assessments. The three of us hope that our success with the program can convince our department, and district, of the value and need of vocabulary instruction in the classroom. With your help, we can continue to lead students to success while gathering data to support what works best in the classroom!
