PLEASE NOTE: THIS FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN HAS NOW CLOSED.
See the "updates" section below for a message of thanks from Uncle Ken to all supporters who assisted to bring him and Cheryl home and help them get their lives re-established in Sydney.
This was the original call out for support:
Ken Canning is Bidjara man, a poet and a playwright, who has fought all his life for Aboriginal rights and for the rights of all people.
Ken and his wife Cheryl have been stuck in the Philippines for more than nine months now due to travel restrictions imposed by the Morrison government. This has led to a rapid deterioration in Ken’s health.
Ken has been unable to see medical specialists or access much needed medication for a range of serious, chronic conditions including diabetes, Myastenia Gravis and acute mental health issues resulting from years of torture at the hands of Australian prison authorities in the 1970s. Ken is now experiencing uncontrolled shakes and severe mental illness. Cheryl too has serious conditions that require urgent attention.
Ken and Cheryl need to come back to Australia as soon as possible. We are currently campaigning for Ken Wyatt, the Minister for Indigenous Australians, to intervene and ensure Ken and Cheryl have a place on upcoming flights scheduled from the Philippines. If they do get approved to fly, the tickets will be very expensive.
Please give generously. All funds raised will go towards the cost of travel and quarantine. Ken has fought for so many people and now we need to fight for him. Bring Uncle Ken home now!
