Goodfortune you say? Tell us more!

Goodfortune Market is a community friendly food store close to home for convenient, daily access. Located on the newly renovated Waters Ave, two blocks north of Daffin park. This is a neighborhood market close to home for easy access to fresh, quality foods. Goodfortune Market will offer grocery staples, coffee and deli foods alongside beverages and small household items. Our goal is to provide an appropriate food resource for residents living within a 15 minute walking distance of our location at 2413 Waters Ave, where there is currently no other option.

Goodfortune Market's mission is to bridge the gap between local food suppliers and hungry urban neighborhoods in Savannah, GA.

WE NEED YOUR HELP
We have been stuck in a holding pattern due to delays in our funding. To open a business on this scale, we had to secure a business loan from a local lending organization that offered SBA (Small Business Administration) loans. These loans are great because they can help with construction, equipment, and other startup costs and are often the only path forward for small, women owned businesses. Because the loans are often backed by the federal and state governments, they do take more time to secure. There are several (many, many) hoops to jump through and lots of delays. It’s common for these loans to take several months.

Our loan application was delayed more times than I can credibly count. We heard that our loan was finally approved in January, but still we have not been given our closing paperwork that would give access to this funding source. All these many months of delays have left Goodfortune Market paying out of our pocket for rent, insurance, utilities, and other costs of maintaining this holding pattern. It is expensive to wait on the wheels of bureaucracy. Our cash flow has been significantly compromised. And we need your help to stay afloat!

Where Does All The Money Go?
What would it take to meet all of our cash flow needs? $45,000. Here is a look at the full picture of expenses that currently equals $30,000.

This picture does not consider the cost to pay our upcoming employees. For that we still need an additional 8K to make payroll expectations. It's important to provide good paying jobs to our community members that choose to share their lives with us. No good business can survive without great workers, teamwork makes the dream work!

We have already been paying a sizable amount of this out of our current cash flow. And as these delays increase in time, the numbers push and pull on this circle graph. Imagine the rent as it grows each month we wait, what do we choose to take from to continue to the next month?

Every 5K pays for another full month of waiting for our loan. Every 3K pays for another month’s worth of rent. Every 2k raised will help pay for our basic monthly expenses. What would $25 dollars mean to us? EVERYTHING! Your pledge of support however great or small, is an outward sign of your willingness to stand by Goodfortune Market and say “Access to fresh food is basic necessity that I want for me and my neighbors.” Let's all help build this together!

Why care about a small market?

Who is behind all this?
My name is Becca Goossen, and I am Goodfortune Market. I am a lifelong service industry professional with experience ranging from cafe and retail inventory control, all the way to fine dining and management for award-winning hospitality groups. Driven by my lifelong mission to feed my community, I am starting a small, daily market a few blocks away from where I live in Savannah, Georgia. This resonates with my passion for food supply chain issues. Diverse communities like my neighborhood desperately need a strong food supply network. I vigorously believe that the food chain should not be seen as a linear chain, but more of a web like network to ensure its stability over time.

Whether or not you donate at this time, we would be so grateful if you would share this story with someone you know. Or have a conversation with someone close you about how a small food store would bring a positive change to your neighborhood. Because the more we shed light on this idea, the better it can grow, making a little good fortune more convenient for everyone. Please check back with us to see continued updates on progress. We look forward to serving you soon!

Goodfortune is good for everyone!
