Bringing home Baby Landon!

As many in our neighborhood may know, our lovely USPS delivery woman, Quita Jones, had a baby boy! Baby Landon was born at 30 weeks and has had some medical issues, resulting in a prolonged NICU stay. He is currently making great progress after over four months in the hospital and hopefully will be ready to come home in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, the US Postal Service does not provide paid parental leave to Landon's parents. Quita has already taken 12 weeks of unpaid leave under FMLA following Landon's birth, which is the maximum allowed for this calendar year.

As anyone who has gone through this type of event can tell you, Landon will require extensive follow-up with specialists and therapists once he goes home. He is not a great candidate for a group daycare setting, given his state will be fragile as he continues to grow at home. I have spoken with Quita about our desire as a neighborhood to support her and her family to allow them to be with Landon as much as possible once he can finally come home. As a former pediatric critical care nurse myself, I can say that doing so will make a big difference in Landon's safety and quality of life in the long term as well as their family life during this challenging time.
