Bringing hope through a community kitchen

Message from Mamdouh who will receive the funds for setting up the community kitchen:

'My name is Mamdouh K. Ferwana, and I am reaching out from Gaza, a region currently facing the devastating impact of war. I live here with my wife, our four sons and one daughter and - like many families in Gaza - we have faced the destruction of our home, our schools, hospitals, and the very fabric of life. Amidst the destruction, my community has been left with shattered livelihoods, and many families, including mine, need support to rebuild our lives and live in dignity.

Many in Gaza are struggling to put food on the table. In the midst of this devastation, I want to provide for my family and local community through a small but vital project: the setting up of a community kitchen that will prepare traditional eastern meals with a focus on various types of rice.

The community kitchen will not be a charity. It will provide food at very affordable prices that are acceptable to people in Gaza, many of whom are grappling with the same hardships we face. It will provide nutritious meals to displaced families who need them most and create employment opportunities as we rebuild.

I envisage it as a place where people can come together, share a meal, and experience a small taste of comfort and normality amidst the chaos left by the war. This initiative aims not only to provide food to those in need in a sustainable way, but also to create some income for my family and others affected by the conflict. As the situation in Gaza starts to improve, this project will serve as a source of stability and a step towards healing and recovery for many.

Why does this community kitchen matter? By sourcing ingredients locally, the project will aim to support small suppliers in Gaza; and staffing of the kitchen will provide job opportunities for unemployed young people. In a modest way both these measures will help to revitalise the shattered economy of the territory. Setting up the project is a positive action to bring hope into lives devastated by war.

Why do I believe we can set up the community kitchen? My father - may he rest in peace - had an oven that baked bread for people, and he also cooked rice for them on a small scale. And one of my sons has been working as a chef, cooking intermittently during this war in shelters for displaced people. With this inheritance and experience we are ready and determined to put all our energy into this kitchen project.

How You Can Help - the funds raised will go towards:

- License fee and rental cost for a place to serve as the kitchen

- Purchasing equipment e.g. stoves, refrigerators, and cooking utensils

- Buying the first round of ingredients and supplies

- Covering initial operational costs such as electricity, gas, and water'

This GoFundMe is hosted by Jeffery Samuelson in UK, to raise money for Mamdouh (full name Mamdouh K Ferwana) to set up a community kitchen in Gaza City. I have known Mamdouh since I worked for Book Aid International in London. We supplied books for universities in Gaza including the Islamic University of Gaza where Mamdouh was Manager of the central library. The funds will be sent by bank transfer to the Bank of Palestine in Gaza.

مثلي مثل العديد من الأفراد والعائلات هنا، عانيت من تدمير منزلي، وتدمير كل ما يشكل أساسا للحياة، فمدارسنا، ومستشفياتنا، ومتنزهاتنا كلها قد تدمرت . الحرب الأخيرة تركتنا نصارع للبقاء، ونحن على قيد الحياة.

في ظل هذا الدمار، أسعى لتوفير احتياجات أسرتي وخدمة مجتمعي من خلال مشروع بسيط ولكنه ضروري: مطبخ يُعنى بإعداد الوجبات الشرقية التقليدية، مع التركيز على أطباق الأرز المتنوعة.

لن يكون هذا المطبخ مجرد مصدر دخل لعائلتي، بل سيوفر وجبات بأسعار معقولة للمجتمع المحلي، حيث يعاني الكثيرون من نفس الصعوبات التي أواجهها. هذا المطبخ سيجد فيه الناس الطعام الشهي، ويجدون لمسة من الراحة والطمأنينة.

لماذا يعتبر هذا المطبخ مهمًا؟

1. دعم الاقتصاد المحلي:

من خلال شراء المكونات محليًا، حيث سيدعم هذا المشروع التجار والمستوردين في غزة، مما يسهم في إنعاش اقتصادنا المدمر.

2. توفير فرص عمل:

سيخلق هذا المطبخ فرص عمل لأولئك الذين يحتاجونها، مما يمنحهم فرصة لاستعادة بعض الاستقرار المالي.

3. تقديم وجبات ميسورة التكلفة:

يعاني العديد من سكان غزة من صعوبة توفير الطعام. سيوفر مطبخي وجبات مغذية وبأسعار معقولة لمن هم في أمس الحاجة إليها.

4. تأمين رزق أسرتي:

سيوفر هذا المشروع لعائلتي وسيلة للبقاء والحياة الكريمة في وقت تتضاءل فيه الخيارات.

كيف يمكنك المساعدة؟
