Bringing Independence to the disability community
Donation protected
The other week I was on the phone with a disabled disabilities advocate like myself. They were telling me about a project with a group of individuals with disability in which they evaluate local businesses for accessibility and work with the owners to improve their accessibility. Their most common accessibility issues were small lips, bumps, grassy areas, and the like. It immediately struck a nerve with me as I know these hurdles all too well. My time in a manual chair that I can no longer utilize outside my home and my time in lesser power chairs illustrated the very same hurdles and often prevented my access to life and community.
I no longer have nearly as many of those hurdles because I have the wheelchair shown in this picture(the first photo, also crowdfunded). Beyond overcoming the relatively simple barriers described above I also navigate many places outdoors and indoors with ease that many other chairs simply cannot. This goes to such an extent that it is indescribable how much independence this chair can bring the user.
I've done the legwork(haha!) to ascertain how to begin improving this model and bring it effectively Back to the market. Yes, this simple and effective machine is no longer available. I have the unique misfortune of having to tell every power chair user I meet struggling with their chair in public that they cannot also attain one. Let us solve that problem together.
With the team I've assembled we have already upgraded the charging system and are on our way to improving many aspects of the design while lessening the financial burden. This design has not been effectively updated in over a decade. Originally designed by a family of aeronautic engineers for their quadriplegic family member it has already reached a bar never otherwise met in terms of independence. I seek to raise that bar by making it more obtainable. #NoBarTooFar
The funds from this will be used to obtain the wheelchair shown directly above, as well as other overhead costs associated with moving this project forward. It is used, as was the one at the top when I received it. The first was the 503rd off the manufacturing line over 20 years ago and it's still kicking. The one we seek is the 493rd chair manufactured. These two chairs represent the time period, much like what happens with classic car models, where the design was at its best. 24 years ago, when I was 15 years old, I received the 100th chair off the line and boy did my life change. Your donations will help us move forward and change more lives the way it has changed mine. Check back weekly as I intend to post videos and further explanations of what this chair does, doesn't do, and how it gives people better lives. Even the gentleman selling this chair wants to be able to obtain a new one in the future.
