As some of you know, I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25 and again at 29. Brittany, a fierce advocate for those she loves, was by my side through the grueling surgeries and treatment that followed. Last week, we learned that Brittany is now facing a similar battle of her own. At the age of 35, Brittany has been diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer - triple negative, grade 3, IDC (one of the most difficult types of BC to treat). Unfortunately, the cancer is so aggressive that treatment will need to start as soon as possible.
One of the most substantial costs that Brittany will face involves her hope to start a family. Brittany has always wanted children, but one impact of the harsh treatment protocol is the chance of infertility. Brittany has elected to undergo fertility treatments prior to starting treatment. Unfortunately, these procedures and related costs are not covered by her insurance, resulting in a large out of pocket expense for her.
In addition to fertility, insurance does not cover various treatments such as clinical trials, acupuncture, and cold caps during chemo to prevent hair loss (Brittany is very sad at the notion of losing her beautiful blond hair. We are on the lookout for a “Khaleesi” wig – she is a big fan of Game of Thrones).
Brittany has also been put on a strict organic, vegan-ish diet by her dietician (me). While undergoing treatment, Brittany will take a step back from work and focus on healing. One thing we can do as a community is to provide financial support that can provide Brittany comfort and stress relief during this journey toward healing.
