Brittany's Medical Crisis

Donation protected
On Monday, March 2, my niece, Brittany Roffel was admitted to Vancouver General Hospital. She had been feeling poorly for several weeks, but in typical Brittany-style she went on living life at 100 miles per hour. On Monday, she was on the bus from Whistler after visiting her boy friend and it became clear from her symptoms something was wrong. Her father, Mark left work and met her at the bus and took her to the ER at VGH. Once her blood work was done she was immediately admitted. (Which we all know in Canada is a clear sign of a serious issue.)

A little bit of history: when Brittany was four years old she spent several weeks in Children’s Hospital with an unknown blood count issue. Where her levels were supposed to be in the 120 range, her’s dropped below 20. Several times the doctor’s told her parent’s, Mark and Herma Roffel to prepare “for the worst.” In that time, Brittany received 16 blood transfusions and several different steroids. She also received a cancer drug (NOTE: she did not have cancer) which miraculously stabilized her health and she was discharged. Yet, she never received a clear diagnosis.

Fast forward 20 years to this past week. Once again Brittany is in the hospital with no clear diagnosis. She is receiving blood transfusions, which help her immune system, however so far the transfusions have not stabilized her. She is exhausted, pale and her bone marrow just doesn’t seem to be doing its job. This morning while her blood count was up - she passed out in the shower. There seem to be something deeper going on. We know she is in one of the best hospital’s in the country and we are grateful for the work the amazing team at VGH is doing for her, but in order to treat her properly they need to have a better idea of what is happening inside her and hopefully a clear diagnosis.

We are first and foremost asking for PRAYER. Pray for healing. Prayers for her and her family. Prayers for the doctors and nurses treating her. Prayers for diagnosis and plans for treatment.

We are also asking for donations. Brittany has been attending BCIT and working almost full time to reach her goal of completing the Broadcast Journalism program at BCIT. Right now it is clear she will be in the hospital for the foreseeable future. Her professors have been incredibly understanding of the situation and while she might be able to complete her studies later, going back to work is not an option until her immune system is in a more stable place. All this has put a massive financial burden on Brittany and her family. Without working she can’t pay the rent on her apartment, her parents have had to take off work to be with her and drive into Vancouver daily from Chilliwack. All the expenses pile up.

I believe in the power of giving. I know the blessings it has given me personally. If you feel led, I ask that you consider giving to this amazing young woman and her family. Her health struggles might be unclear, but let’s ease her financial struggles a bit.

Thank you in advance for your giving.
