Brittany's African Medical Mission

Hello friends, family, and supporters!

I am so excited and blessed to finally have this opportunity to travel to Ethiopia to advance my medical training.  A group of students and physicians from Howard University College of Medicine are traveling to Gondar, Ethiopia to spend time getting training and offering meidcal services at the University of Gondar hospital.  This is a unique and special opportunity not only to be exposed to illnesses that we will simply not see in the United States, but also to have exposure to another culture, another medical system, and to give back to an amazing host institution that has come to have a great relationship with Howard University.  Additionally, I will be traveling to Cairo, Egypt for a few days with my classmate to visit her family and we are working on being able to visit a women's health clinic while we are there.

The University of Gondar is the only hospital in this area of Ethiopia, servicing approximately 5 million people.  People will travel upwards of 200 kilometers, often times by foot, to get medical care here.  Last year, the hospital underwent a renovation to increase their already 400 bed census.  They have a wide variety of medical specialties here, and I plan to spend the majority of my time in Labor and Delivery with the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Additionally, the University of Gondar has a fistula clinic to provide surgical repairs for a devastating complication of delivery that is all too common in sub-Saharan Africa.  Exposure to this is essential in my path to provide gynecologic care internationally.

So as not to be a burden to the hospital, we are bringing our own supplies, as well as supplies to share with the hospital, so please let me know if you would like to donate any first aid items, nitrile gloves, masks, etc. We are responsible for raising our own funds for this mission trip.  Specifically, I am seeking $4000 to finance my airfare, hotel accomodations, daily transportation while in Ethiopia, vaccinations, travel medications, visa fees, food, historical weekend excursions, and medical supplies.  However, anything you can provide to be a blessing to me and to the people of Gondar is welcome and appreciated, especially your prayers.   Thank you in advance!
