Brodsky's mom is in physical, emotional & financial decline and B needs help getting her to safety.
In March 2022, it became clear to Brodsky that her mom (who lives in Philadelphia) was in steep health decline.
Having no other family to call on, Brodsky made the life-changing decision to leave her long-time career to travel 3000 miles away to Philly with the intention of helping her mom get back on her feet.
When she arrived, the state she found her mom in was worse than expected. It quickly became apparent her mom was neglecting her hygiene and personal care, experiencing paranoia and confusion, and living in a home that hadn’t been cleaned or tended to that was infested with mice. She was not feeding herself and in consequence, began developing chronic health issues. In addition, her business of 20 years, which was her sole source of income, was being greatly impacted by poor decisions and inept business management, most likely caused by dementia. Brodsky attempted to care for her mom as best she could and to save the business, but in that process, she went into debt while living off of her savings to support herself.
Eventually, Brodsky's mom was admitted to a hospital for a long-term stay where she was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and early-onset dementia. Unfortunately, she was eventually released from the hospital without an aftercare plan and again her care fell on Brodsky-- but since Brodsky lives on the other side of the country, attempting to get her mom's healthcare needs met was nearly impossible. Before long it became clear that in order to keep her mom safe she would have to be moved closer to Brodsky, where she can advocate for her elder care. Because Brodsy's mom's needs are extreme, Brodsky will need to admit her into an assisted living facility as quickly as possible.
Since June, Brodsky has been largely unable to work for months at a time because caring for her mom is a more than full-time job. Now with this big move she will again need to step away from paid work while she travels to Philadelphia to move her mom out of her home and into the facility.
Brodsky needs support with this difficult process and transition. While in Philadelphia she will need resources to rent an airbnb so she can keep herself safe and care for her chronic illness while she moves her mom out of her home. She also needs help with the cost of a Uhaul, food, and ongoing support while she is unable to work full time due to the tremendous amount of care she has been asked to give. I think we can soften this for her!
Please share widely and help support our friend if you can! Any amount helps and is greatly appreciated. Updates will be posted as we have them.
