Brogan's Horizon-of-Hope Treatment

THE STORY:

He’s a smart, 17-year-old, blue-eyed blond. The youngest child in a loving Christian home who attends church and private school. A happy-go-lucky guy who loves soccer, is crazy about basketball and easily joins in small-group fun. That’s what most people see.

What they don’t see is what goes on inside Brogan’s mind or behind closed doors at home.

They don’t see the scary, dark places and the self-destructive behaviors that are spiraling out of control. They don’t know Brogan was diagnosed with ADHD at age 6 and clinical depression at age 8. They don’t feel the discord that results from his depression and fierce, angry outbursts.

Here is the rest of the story.

Brogan is a very bright young man, blessed with keen intelligence. Teachers have consistently noted his academic abilities. And yet, ADHD has damaged Brogan’s executive functioning skills, and he now struggles to maintain the organization required to succeed at school or in life. As a result, Brogan has all but given up on schooling.

To compensate, he relies on a false reality. His life has become shrouded in a veil of lies - to the point where teachers, school administrators, coaches, family and even friends can’t tell what is true. Often he withdraws from the people who care and love him most.

Brogan’s self-sabotaging choices, chronic academic underachievement, unwillingness to accept help, and inability to be honest about his issues have brought him to a critical juncture. Expert intervention is now crucial.

Over the years, we have worked closely with physicians, therapists, teachers and school administrators. We have tried many things to keep Brogan engaged and safe, and yet he continues to disconnect and inflict self-failure. Quite frankly, we are afraid of what will likely result if radical changes are not made immediately.

Upon urgent recommendations from medical personnel and school administrators, we have embarked on a medically necessary course of treatment. After much research, soul-searching, prayer and tears, we feel God has led us to an intensive therapeutic environment designed to meet Brogan’s complex needs.

In late February, we enrolled our much-loved son in Turning Winds Academic Institute, a therapeutic boarding school in northern Montana. Our story of how God led us to this beautiful, remote setting and to the compassionate experts who work with troubled teens at this accredited school is indeed awe-inspiring.

Upon learning he was going to a new school with students and staff who could understand and help him handle his issues, Brogan responded positively and with a sense of optimism. This is indeed a horizon of hope for him.

The cost for Brogan to attend Turning Winds is $78,000. There is no way we can come up with so much money … but we trust that God has led us here, and now we trust He will help us raise the funding Brogan needs. We are tightening our budget. His mother is taking a second job. We are seeking help from our church. We are also asking for support from friends, family and caring strangers. If you can make a donation - large or small - to help cover Brogan’s costs at Turning Winds, you may literally help save a young man’s life.

We all look forward to the day when Brogan can return home with the tools he needs to successfully and independently navigate the rest of his life without hurting himself or others. We believe hope is on the horizon.
