Bronson "Boo" Hughes Emergency Surgery
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Amelia, and I'm fundraising for my favorite human and animal duo, Meaghan and Boo.
Meaghan rescued Boo 8 or so years ago. He was overlooked at his shelter because he was so small and raggedy with a disability that needed specific attention. Meaghan knew she could provide him with a loving home, filled out an application, and brought him home several days later. The two have been inseparable ever since. Boo can be found walking the streets of Philadelphia, hobbling on his three good legs and doing a sweet limp walk on his dangly 4th leg. Saturday brunch and stroller walks are his favorite because the locals give him extra attention. Boo is a sweet boy who likes making new friends, keeping the old, and being his momma's little protector. He likes to bug his cat brother, jump at animals or men he finds threatening on tv, and hide under his favorite couch for naps.
Yesterday afternoon Meaghan came home and was not greeted by her usual barks and kisses at the door. Instead, Boo was very lethargic. Meaghan began to become a little concerned. She waited to see if anything would change after his evening walk. Things only worsened; he refused to go to the bathroom and reached the point where he couldn't even use his back legs. Meaghan took Boo to one of the only ER Vets in the city that could see him. The staff at this clinic went above and beyond for Boo. It soon became clear to them that he would need an MRI. They made an appointment for him at Penn Vet Hospital the following day. The vet gave him some medicine to keep him comfortable and put him in a catheter so he could get some relief.
The MRI showed Boo's neck was broken and would need surgery immediately. After a series of questions about his day-to-day activities, the doctor told Meaghan that his favorite nap spot- underneath the couch, was likely the culprit. He went into surgery this afternoon; the update being no news is good news. They sent Meaghan home, where she's been waiting since. Boo pulled through surgery, but the vet told Meaghan she would need to wait to see him since he would likely be too excited about her arrival, which could cause more damage.
Not long after Meaghan received the good news, the vet called her to inform her that Boo was now struggling to get oxygen and that they would need to do more tests to see what was going on with his upper airway. They had to get her permission to do a trichotomy if something happened during the night.
In a day, Meaghan was forced to make very challenging decisions in the blink of an eye. Very costly decisions. Her love for Boo surpasses those costs. Meaghan will be looking at some severe expenses between surgery, hospital bills, and aftercare. She's not one to ever ask for help or money. So I'm going to do it for her.
Any amount would mean so much to her and Boo. Thank you for reading their story and for your support during this challenging time.
