Running for Hope: In Memory of My Aunt Christine

On April 27, I will be running the Brooklyn Half Marathon with more than just miles in my heart—I will be running for my aunt, who lost her battle with mental illness on December 10, 2023. Her life was filled with love, laughter, and kindness, but like so many who struggle with mental health, she carried a weight that became too much to bear. I wish she had been met with more understanding, more resources, and more support. I wish she were still here.

Losing her has been a heartbreaking reminder that mental health struggles are often invisible, but their impact is devastating. Too many people suffer in silence, afraid to reach out or unsure where to turn. Too many families are left grieving, wondering what more could have been done. No one should have to fight this battle alone.

That’s why I’m dedicating this race to her memory and using it as a way to raise funds for Mental Health America, a mental health organization that works tirelessly to provide resources, support, and hope to those in need. Because mental health is just as important as physical health. Because no one should feel alone in their darkest moments. Because we can and must do better.

Every step I take on that course is for my aunt. Every mile is for those still fighting. And every dollar raised will go toward ensuring that more people get the help they deserve before it’s too late.

If you’ve ever lost someone to suicide, if you’ve ever struggled with your own mental health, or if you simply believe in a world where no one has to suffer in silence, I ask you to stand with me. Donate if you can, share if you will, and help me turn hope into help.

This one’s for her. This one’s for hope.
