Brown Skin Matters

Brown Skin Matters is a community sourced database of dermatological conditions on non-white skin. We seek to counter the incredible dearth of reference photos on people of color. Funds raised here will help to offset the costs of registering as an LLC (initial fee plus ongoing monthly management fees), legal fees, web hosting and development (initial website design, plus ongoing hosting and management costs), and modest compensation for the people who spend their time operating and expanding this project.
Upcoming efforts aim to increase the reach of the resource, launch our new standalone website and database, begin including education videos and expert blog posts, create an editorial board of dermatologists, and widen collaborations with physicians and researchers. We are also working up launch merchandise that features and promotes artists of color while raising awareness of BSM.
The project will always remain free and accessible to the public.
Brown Skin Matters is primarily operated by Ellen Buchanan Weiss. She is not a physician. She is a mother who wants to send her child into a world prepared to offer him the same quality of medical care that anyone else can expect, and she wants all mothers to be able to do the same. You can learn more about how she started this project by checking out this NPR piece.
