Support Bruce Ferguson's Memorial and Family
Donation protected
My dad, Bruce Ferguson, passed away on Dec. 1, 2024, after a four-year battle with acute myeloid leukemia and, prior to that, seven years with myelodysplastic syndrome. Bruce was a lifelong small family farmer. Both conditions are linked to exposure to chemicals commonly used on farms.
Bruce was an early adopter of conservation practices such as no-till, starting in the late 1970s. He was a strong proponent of agriculture and farmland protection, serving as chair of the Washington County Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board. He was an animal lover who treated all animals with compassion and had many animal friends during his life.
He led efforts in the 1980s, along with over 300 other local residents, to sue to demand environmental review of the Washington County trash plant.
Bruce was a very kind man who spent countless hours during the last 35 years engaged in largely volunteer efforts on behalf of the community, often with little consideration given to compensation. He was a town supervisor for 16 years, a school board member for 10 years, and a town councilman for 10 years. In addition, his many volunteer and community efforts included:
- Serving as a first responder and ambulance driver for Salem Rescue Squad, and as president of the squad
- Donating time to two local cemeteries: Evergreen and Cossayuna Lake
- Advocating for the preservation of Washington County historic covered bridges
- Establishing the Georgi Museum in Shushan as an art museum and community park along the Battenkill River
- Adapting the shuttered county courthouse and jail in Salem into a community kitchen, community garden, and event space that hosts local activities and programs
- Preserving Northeast railroads and restoring the Salem train depot
- Promoting local economic development, tourism, and history on many committees and boards, such as Lakes to Locks Passage
I would like to raise funds to properly memorialize my dad with a stone in Evergreen Cemetery, where his parents and sister are buried. I would also like to plant a tree in his honor and host a celebration of life in the warmer months of 2025 that will be open to the community.
Funds will also be used to pay end-of-life expenses, remaining medical or other debt, legal fees for the estate, and to ensure the family farmland stays in farming.
Thank you so much!
