Hi, my name is Dave Gamell. I want to tell you about my best friend, Bruce McGonigal. He’s been like a brother to me for the last 35 years; no matter what, he’s there to help me with any task. He comes to the aid of everyone he meets in a heartbeat. Bruce is a self-employed heavy equipment operator who works contract to contract, sometimes for long stretches looking for work. In these lean times, Bruce volunteers his time to help his friends and neighbors, people who need his unique skill set but lack the funds to hire someone. You should see him operate heavy equipment: excavator, skid steer, front-end loader, backhoe, dump truck. You name it. He can operate them like an artist on wheels. I’ve seen him perform miracles with this stuff, precision beyond comprehension with incredibly large equipment.

Sunday, December 4, Bruce suffered a massive stroke. Living alone, he lay on his bedroom floor, unable to call for help for hours until his neighbor came to his aid. He’s now lying in the hospital wondering what will happen to his life, his business, his equipment, his home. His prognosis is not looking good in the coming days. He mumbled he would be back to work in a week. His spirits fell when his caregivers said it could be weeks, months, and possibly years before he regained function. Bruce is currently paralyzed on one side and struggles to mumble simple words. His frustration brings me to tears. It's a very real possibility that Bruce will lose his home, all his equipment, and his business if he can’t get back to work soon.
