Bruce Trail Hike for Safehaven!
Hi all!
This upcoming July, I will be spending the month through hiking Canada's longest and oldest marked hiking trail. The trail follows the Niagara escarpment to form a 900 kilometre path connecting Queenston Heights near Niagara falls to Tobermory.
I will be using this hike to raise money for the recreation budget for The Safehaven Project for Community Living, a non-profit organization that provides both respite care and residential care for children with complex medical needs in a non-insitutionalized, residential setting. The respite program allows family members to recharge and rest all while knowing their child is safe and being cared for by trained medical staff and residential care for children with complex medical needs. The residential program provides 24/7 year round individualized care tailored to their specific physical, intellectual and emotional needs.
Over the last year, I have had the opportunity to work with Safehaven as a recreation coordinator through their summer student program. I was tasked with creating and implementing a recreation plan for the the summer months. Through this opportunity I have learned what a truly amazing organization Safehaven is. From the support workers on the front line to the administration staff, everyone has the same goal; to provide the best possible life for individuals dealt a poor set of cards.
However, as Safehaven is a not-for-profit organization and is almost exclusively funded through government subsidy and donations, the recreation budget is limited. Due to this, the recreation programming is focused mainly on free and cheap events/activities such as street festivals and arts and crafts. while these events certainly have their place in a therapeutic recreation program, they can become repetitive for the kids and the events are often times extremely busy. This can lead to a lack of participation and therefore benefit for the kids. The real hands on experiences that the kids benefit from are often out of reach due their price.
Through this hike, I intend to raise $5000 for Safehaven's recreation program. With this money, these amazing kids will be able to experience fun and exciting activities that truly benefit them. Your money would be going to things such as music therapy, pet therapy, community outings and parties for the children as well as much more!
100% of all donations will go straight to Safehaven. Any and all donations help and are greatly appreciated by myself, Safehaven and most importantly; the kids.
Thank you all!
Luke
