Help Bryan Benning Hand degloving injury 8-29-2022

Donation protected
• My husband injured his right hand on Aug 29th. His glove got caught in a roller that bends metal. He believes a burr on the old machine snagged his glove - in which pulled his hand into the roller and messed his hand up all the way up to his wrist.  From where he was standing and that with quick thinking he was able to reach these buttons to stop and reverse the machine from continueing to devower more of his body. Had he been another inch away from where he was standing he may have lost his full arm or even worst his life. So the Good Ol' Lord was with him that day! And that we are extremely thankful! Our local hospital here in Sioux Falls SD diagnosed this issue as a de-gloving accident & declaired him a trama case and advised he needed to be flown to Mayo Clinic for emergancy surgery as they didnt have what would be needed to treat an injury of this degree. I asked a Nurse for the address as I have never been there before. They provided me an address for Mayo in Mankato. So arriving @ Mayo in Mankato MN. I was informed very nicely that they flew my husband to Rochester MN instead. So back on the road we go.  During this time - Emergancy surgery was being done. During this surgery they basically took his skin that was pulled off his hand and thumb and placed the bones back into the skin. Mayo sent us home for 1 week as time was needed to see what would live or die. • • 2nd trip to Mayo St Mary's Rochester MN  • Sept 7th - Come to find out the results were bad.  None of the skin lived it all turned black & purple and died. His index finger also died. So he had surgery #2 and surgery #3 in which they cut off all the dead skin and half of his index finger during these 2 surgeries. We were advised that the only option now was skin regraphing to see if this will work. The Dr's advised us that a hand with out a thumb. The hand is only good for a maxamum of 40% usage. But with out a thumb they say a hand is really almost worthless so the plan is to do everything to save his thumb. So they discharged my husbsnd on Friday Sept 9th to return for more surgeries the following week.  • • 3rd trip to Mayo Rochester with 3 more surgeries with a 2 week stay.  • 4th Surgery - They cut off more dead skin and another chunk of his index finger and a 16th off his thumb.  • 5th surgery - taking skin and mussle and 2 blood vessells from his right leg to cover his right thumb and hand. • 6th surgery needed as there wasnt enough skin available from the right leg to cover his entire right hand. So the left leg is now needed to take skin to finish covering the back of the hand near the wrist and also to to use close up his right leg. And so they sent us home Sept 23rd with orders to return in 2 weeks for a check up on Oct 7th. • • Lots of daily home care needed to change dressings daily and care for his every day basic needs as my husband now has medical needs on both his legs in addition to this origional right hand injury.  • • With that we are advised that there are many many more surgerys to come. The Dr's have talked that there will be many surgeries extending into likely April of next year.  So this is going to be a long hall.  • • Also currently he has no feeling in his middle finger. They say he will never have feeling in his thumb. And time will tell how all the other fingers turn out. His ring finger and index finger knuckles are kept in place with pins. And they have pinned his thumb in place to keep it away from touching his other fingers in hopes that this skin graphing will take. • • I am not working and are staying home with my husband as he needs me by his side every step of the way. With all these upcoming known surgeries yet to take place yet. We know down the road will be theropy for months. The doctors say to its possible he may not be able to return to work even.  • • So we asking for help which is very hard to do as we have never been people to ever ask for anyones help in anything we do in life as we have every day bills that will keep coming any many more trips to Rochester tripahead etc. Anything will help. Workmans comp just doesnt cover it and they wont cover me to stay home to care for my husband and give him the best quality care he could get.    • • I see this doesnt allow me to me to attach multiple pictures to really show what has happened. You can go to my facebook account or message me and i would certainly share some. Trust me you will need a strong stomach.  • • Over this last week and a half all the hand therapy has been fun (my husband will disagree) tough and painful he will say as Im not the one enduring the discomfort and agony •  and pain.  • • Today 10-18-2022 he is receiving some extra hardware called finger gutters on his fingers to help with stretching each individual finger joint straight and also modified his brace again to force his fingers to set in a straighter position as well.  • • Tomarrow 10-19-2022 • We head back up to Mayo Rochester for the next checkup on his hand and both legs to see what happens in this appointment. We pray and hope that the bones are healed enough to remove the last 3 pins in his hand. • • Well the October appointment was just a check up and some X-rays and advised to go back home as the Dr wanted more healing time before he does anything with Bryan’s hand. The sore from the skin graphing primary site on his right leg is still working on healing up as well. There has been no more feeling returned yet to either hand or leg. Therapy was to be continued 4 days a week. • • 11-18-2022 • Was just another check up for the hand and leg. • More X-rays were taken. Not much has changed since the last appointment in October. Therapy was continued 4 days a week and more healing time to my injury’s were needed per the doctor.  • • 1-10-2023 • Another check up @ Mayo in Rochester. Xray’s continue to show the fracture in my husbands index finger is still not healed. However a decision was made by the doctor that it would be ok to schedule the first liposuction surgery on Bryan’s right hand (primary hand) The Dr was in a huge hurry as he was headed to another surgery so he spent just a couple of minutes in the room in fact the X-rays didn’t get done until after he had already been in the room and gone.  This 1st liposuction is currently scheduled for Feb 3 2023. We don’t know how many of these surgery’s there will be. And really was not provided a lot of detail on how it works exactly but we are happy to know we are progressing forward in this journey.  It’s still going to be a long road ahead with more liposuction surgery’s and reconstruction surgery’s in the future for his hand.  Between each liposuction surgery he will need at least 3 seeking of healing time between them. We continue with Hand Therapy 3 days a week.  As for the feeling - Bryan has not gained any feelings back yet in either the right hand or the right leg.  In fact the leg has been giving him problems as he has fallen a few times as Im not always by his side as he is trying to do something’s without me right there. I cant be around all the time. This is all due to no feeling in the sections of the leg and knee around the skin-graphing site which was also taken from his primary leg. He has to try to remember to tell his brain what he’s planning on doing and if he doesn’t think about it I watch as his knee gives out I will see him limp down while walking on his right side. We believe this no feeling thing is going to affect him the rest of his life as he has not gained any feeling back yet and going upward to 5 months now.  • Income remains with workman’s comp of just 66% of his wage for our household for now with me by his side helping him with the every day things that he still can not do on his own. My role as wife is been changed to caregiver/wife….  I sure hope things get better as I do want to be able to go back to work in the future when the time is right where he doesn’t need me here 24/7 for assistance. •
