I lived in HUD housing (section 8) until I was 10 years old. We didn't have a lot of toys when I was kid, but we always had books - most of them used. My mom loved to read, and she passed that on to me and my brother. Being a proficient reader had an immeasurable positive impact on my education and life.

 

When I went away to college in Los Angeles (the first person in my family to attend college!), I was looking for an opportunity to volunteer on the weekends. Through LA Works, I found Reading to Kids, which seeks to foster a love of reading for kids in downtown Los Angeles elementary schools. Many of the children in the service area are from low income families, are recent immigrants to the country, and are limited-English proficient.

 

On the 2nd Saturday of the month, I would read books selected by the teacher to the children while their parents meet with school teachers to receive support. At the end of each monthly reading "club", the books are donated to the school library, and the children are provided with a book as a "reward" for their attendance. For many of these kids, these are the first age-appropriate books their families will own. The smile on their faces as they get to choose a NEW book for themselves is awe-inspiring.

 

Reading aloud to children is one of the most valuable things we can do for young children. Please help us continue the life changing mission of this organization!

More information about Reading to Kids: Reading to Kids is a grassroots organization dedicated to inspiring underserved children with a love of reading, thereby enriching their lives and opportunities for future success. We organize monthly reading clubs at Los Angeles elementary schools, where pairs of volunteers read aloud to small groups of children, grades K-5, in a fun and interactive environment. The hardcover read-aloud books are donated to the school libraries, while the children receive paperback books to build their own home libraries.

The BTS DownloadTeam will *NOT* be handling any of the funds for this non-profit fundraiser.  They will go directly to Reading To Kids.
