Sammy’s story: Buck For A Puck To Help the HOMELESS
Back in April 2017 we were at a Pittsburgh vs Toronto NHL game, Sammy is a HUGE Marc Andre Fleury #29 fan and so we were enjoying the FLOWER in net in Toronto. Game ended and as we left to head back to our hotel we crossed the path of a homeless man. As much as I wanted to usher Sammy from what I felt could be an unsafe situation Sammy pulled and fought to go help this man. Later as he put his head to the pillow, he would become emotional about how we didn’t do anything to help. His exact words "how could we have just walked away?" I realized I had failed 2 people that day, the homeless man and also my son. That led to months of him in tears at bedtime. As each day came to a close Sammy would find it hard to hold back tears and would repeat "mom, why didn't we help??? how could we have just walked away?"
For his birthday, Sammy would ask his friends to not give him a gift but fill a backpack with things for a homeless person. We would deliver the backpacks to Windsor StreetHelp and Windsor Missions. Sammy visited the homeless shelter handing out a cooler of watermelon for one of his birthdays. Then HOCKEY started back up and it limited his ability to make way to the shelters and that’s when BUCK FOR A PUCK was born. Sammy is a goalie in hockey.
Since 2017 during every October 15 to November 15 Sammy invites the community to sponsor or pledge Sammy $1 for every puck save he makes during a game or help with a donation towards helping the homeless. Through out the 4 years the COMMUNITY has been so generous and their kindness has helped Buck For A Puck deliver their gift to Windsor Missions and Windsor Streethelp a total of $19,600:
2017 - $2,700
2018 - $3,800
2019 - $5,300
2020 - $7,260
This 2021-2022 season Sammy has joined the Tecumseh Shoreline Minor Hockey Association with the Tecumseh Eagles U14, Bantam Minor AA. Sammy is excited to develop with his mates and make memories and he does not forget the importance to bring awareness to the homeless situation that surrounds us and so he is reaching out to the community asking to join him by pledging $1 for each puck save (approx 10-12 games) he makes between Oct 15 - Nov 15, 2021.
CAMPAIGN runs Oct 15 - Nov 15, 2021 - All gifts will be given to Windsor Missions and Windsor StreetHelp.
